Historically in the near and far Eastern regions of the Mediterranean, where most genuine hand-knotted Oriental rugs have been woven for centuries, expert craftsmen only flat wash their rugs by hand. After washing/rinsing and the extraction of excess water is completed, then and only then, under the watchful eyes of the craftsmen, the rugs are placed face down on grass, or river rocks to dry in the radiant heat of the Sun. At Hilliards we have been washing rugs by hand the old fashioned way in the same location since the 1930's. We're committed to this age-old tradition of humans and nature working together as one. We rise early to start washing your rugs by hand every morning. Yes, it's hard work, but for us it's a labor of love. And just like the master craftsmen of the near and far Eastern regions of the Mediterranean, when the Sun rises your rugs are placed on our grassy knoll, where they begin drying under the hot Florida Sun. This process not only evaporates the excess moisture from the rug, but also utilizes the Sun's strong UV Rays to rejuvenate, and regenerate the wool fibers. This in turn stimulates the release of the natural lanolin inherent to the wool fiber. What a lot of rug cleaners do not understand is that Virgin Wool is a living fiber, and is naturally antibacterial, and as such the homeostasis of the fiber must be protected throughout the entire cleaning process.
